Argyle Legends vs BBC Media X1 2010
Argyle Legends warmed up for their forthcoming match with Liverpool Legends on May 3rd with a comfortable victory over a BBC Media X1 at Dean Cross Plymstock.
The game in aid of the Chestnut Appeal for prostate cancer in Devon & Cornwall kicked off in dry conditions in front of a healthy crowd.
The BBC X1 were the first to threaten in the 4th minute when a free kick from fully 30 yards hit the Legends upright with goalkeeper Peta Balac well beaten. The BBC X1 were giving a good account of themselves until 2 goals in 3 minutes by Martin Barlow and Marcus Crocker gave the Legends and 2 - 0 lead after 22 minutes.
After 25 minutes the Legends replaced Marcus Crocker, Ryan Cross and Martin Barlow with Kevin Nancekevill, Joe Davey and Darren Garner.
In the 33rd minute the BBC X1 reduced the deficit with a hotly disputed goal reminiscent of Geoff Hurst's goal in the 1966 World Cup Final although on this occasion the referee over ruled the linesman to give the goal. Spurred on by this sense of injustice the Legends went 3 - 1 ahead in the 35th minute when Joe Davey hit a screamer into the top corner from well outside the penalty area. Shortly before the interval Martin Buster Phillips netted from close range to give the Legends a 4 - 1 lead at half time.
For the second half Gary Penhaligon replaced Peta Balac in the Legends goal and Martin Barlow and Marcus Crocker returned in place of Gordon Nisbet and Martin Phillips.
The Legends started the second half in dynamic style and scored 3 goals in 12 minutes against the hardworking Media X1 to lead 7 - 1 with goals from Kevin Nancekevill, an own goal and Marcus Crocker who netted his second of the game. Not to be outdone the Media X1 reduced the deficit on the hour through a well taken penalty.
The Legends increased their lead in the 65th minute through Martin Barlow's second of the game and 3 minutes later Mark Damerell made it 9 - 2 to the Legends.
The game was proving a useful workout for the Legends and it was the Media X1 who completed the scoring in the 87th minute to make the final score 9 - 3.
