Argyle Legends vs Chestnut Rovers 2016
Sunday 12th June 2016
Argyle Legends made it two successive victories when they defeated Chestnut Rovers 4-3 in a closely contested encounter at Marjons, Plymouth.
The Legends gave debuts to former players Lee Hodges and jamie Morrison-Hill as well as having a guest goalkeeper in Carl Bradford.
The Legends were quickly into their stride and had their hosts penned in their own half for the opening quarter of the game. Some of the football was of an excellent standard as they passed the ball to feet and moved it quickly on the excellent 3G surface.
David Byrne was having an outstanding game at right back, constantly putting great crosses into the Chestnut Rovers penalty area. From one of these Darren Garner headed home from virtually on the goal line to give the Legends the lead in the 21st minute.
Bradford was called into action a minute later, making a great save at his near post to prevent an equalising goal.
The Legends were still controlling the game but found the home defence well organised with 9 men behind the ball on most ocassions.
After 36 minutes Mark Damerell made it 2-0 to the Legends when he scored with a stunning volley direct from a Joe Davey corner.
A minute later Darren Garner scored his second and the Legends third of the game when he slotted the ball home following a great run and cross from Jamie Morrison- Hill.
There was no further scoring as the Legends lead 3-0 at the interval following a great first half performance.
At the start of the second half the Legends replaced Leigh Cooper with substitute Shaun Sullivan who immediately slotted in at left back.
The opening stages continued in the same vein as the first half and the Legends made it 4-0 in the 47th minute when a home defender sliced the ball into his own net following another fantastic cross from David Byrne.
The home side kept plugging away and pulled a goal back in the 55th minute when some casual play at the back was duly punished.
A minute later the Legends lost possession in midfield and were duly punished again as the ball was rifled past Bradford.
Suddenly it was game on as the hosts sensed there could be a famous comeback.
The Legends were further hampered when Lee Hodges hobbled off with a hamstring injury and David Byrne was severeley restricted in his movement with a calf strain. The Legends switched Shaun Sullivan to centre back to partner captain Chris Harrison, moved jamie Morrison Hill to left back, moved Steve Brownlow to right back and introduced guest player John Beynon up font to partner Joe Davey.
The game was now much more even and the hosts set up a tense finish when they made it 4-3 in the 86th minute.
The Legends were desperate not to throw away such a commanding lead and despite a couple of nervy moments played out the remainder of the game to win by 4 goals to 3 and retain the Chestnut Trophy.
