Argyle Legends vs Combined Services 2011
Friday 13th May
Argyle Legends crashed to a 3 - 0 defeat in their latest fixture against a very good Combined Services X1 at Home Park after a disappointing second half performance saw them concede three goals in the last 33 minutes.
The game successfully organised by the Green Taverners was arranged to raise funds for the staff at Plymouth Argyle Football Club.
The Legends gave a debuts to Danny Salman and Jon Sheffield and were delighted to welcome back Kevin Hodges and Gary Penhaligon after lengthy absences. Also in the squad were Kevin Sammels and Steve Riggs, two fans who donated money to the staff fund to play alongside the Legends. Missing for this difficult looking encounter were Martin Barlow, Leigh Cooper, Kevin Nancekivill, Jason Rowbotham and David Byrne.
The game started cautiously with both teams searching for openings and after 10 minutes Darren Garner had the first shot of the game, his effort being saved comfortably by the Services goalkeeper.
With Garner and Mark Rowe both prominent in midfield and Kevin Hodges and Mark Damerell lively on the flanks it was the Legends who looked more likely to open the scoring and Garner went close in the 23rd minute, his shot being well saved by a competent Services goalkeeper. Garner was proving a constant threat and had another effort well saved in the 24th minute.
With Darren Tallon and Ryan Cross dominant in the centre of defence the Combined Services were finding it difficult to create openings but went desperatly close in the 30th minute, a 30 yard effort flashing just wide of the post.
In the 33rd minute the Services goalkeeper made a brilliant stop from Mark Damerell with that man Garner blasting the rebound over the bar. Two minutes later Damerell fired just wide and in the 40th minute fired over the crossbar after great work from Garner.
The Legends were still attacking as the first half ended with the game still goalless.
The Legends made three pre-arranged changes for the second half with Jon Sheffield replacing Gary Penhaligon, Geoff Battams on for Mark Damerell and Steve Riggs replacing fellow guest player Kevin Sammels.
The Combined Services side started the second half on the offensive and were beginning to stretch a visibly tired looking Legends side, playing their 5th game in 4 weeks.
Chris Harrison almost put the Legends ahead in the 55th minute when his header, following a magnificent Danny Salmon cross, was saved by the Services goalkeeper.
It was the Combined Services who opened the scoring in the 57th minute when a long ball caught out the Legends defence. The Legends immediately replaced the hobbling Ryan Cross with Spencer Cooper. Cooper slotted into the left hand side of midfield with Chris Harrison returning to the middle of the back four.
Two minutes later it was 2 - 0 to Combined Services when the Legends stopped ,expecting an offside flag that never came.
The Legends now had a mountain to climb and despite a flurry of substitutions never looked like penetrating a well organised Services defence, although Tommy Tynan had a shot saved in the 87th minute.
In the 90th minute the Combined Services scored a third goal when Jon Sheffield was left exposed after a misplaced back pass.
The final whistle blew a minutes later with the Legends left ruing a host of missed first half chances.
It was later announced that a sum approaching £5,000 had been raised for the staff at Plymouth Argyle FC.
