Argyle Legends vs Cornwall Jollys Combination Select XI 2013

 Sunday 14th April
When Leigh Cooper, Chris Harrison and Mark Rowe walked out at Villa Park for that never to be forgotten FA Cup Semi Final vs Watford in April 1984, they could never have imagined that 29 years to the day later, they would be part of an Argyle Legends side beaten 6-3 at windswept Troon. It is testament to their fitness and love of football that they still turn out to raise money for charity in the South West. On this occasion Help for Heroes was the worthy cause.
Playing their first game since November and without a recognised goalkeeper, a fixture against a much younger Cornwall Jollys Combination Select XI always looked a difficult fixture.
On a bumpy surface in difficult conditions, the opening exchanges were fairly even with neither goalkeeper being seriously tested.
The Legends came closest to opening the scoring in the 17th minute when Danny O'Hagan, playing his first game since breaking an ankle 6 months ago, headed narrowly over following a fine cross from David Byrne.
The game remained evenly poised until 3 goals in a 5 minute spell found the Legends trailing 3-0 after 30 minutes. Shell shocked by this barrage the Legends did well to keep the hosts at bay until the half time interval.
The Legends made 3 changes for the 2nd half with Spencer Cooper, Paul Smith and Mark Damerell replacing Martin Barlow, Darren Tallon and Leigh Cooper.
The changes appeared to have little effect as on the hour the Legends found themselves trailing 5-0.
In the 63rd minute the Legends pulled a goal back when Bradley Swiggs converted a cross from Ryan Cross.
Any hope of a comeback seemed to have vanished 3 minutes later when a defensive lapse was duly punished by the home team.
It is to their credit that the Legends continued to play their football and pulled a goal back in the 70th minute when Paul Smith converted a penalty.
5 minutes later the hard working O'Hagan scored from close range to reduce the deficit to 6-3.
There were no more goals and the hosts ran out 6-3 winners.
