Argyle Legends vs Cornwall Legends 2014

Sunday 17th August 2014

Argyle Legends and Cornwall Legends shared 6 goals between them in a thrilling encounter played at Newquay FC on Sunday 17th August.
Cornwall Legends included 4 players who had played professional football so the Legends knew they were in for a difficult afternoon.
The game arranged to raise funds for Newquay Community Projects got off to a sensational start when Paul Smith opened the scoring for the Legends after only 4 mins with a tremendous 25 yards shot which gave former Argyle keeper Dave Philp no chance of saving.
Cornwall Legends came back into the game and equalised in the 20th minute when a shot from Glyn Hooper took a deflection off Chris Harrison and found its way past keeper Paul Hider.
In the 28th minute the Legends restored their lead when Smith scored his second of the afternoon, firing home from 12 yards after great work from Darren Garner and Danny O'Hagan.
In an absorbing first half Cornwall Legends equalised on the stroke of half time when winger Ian Gosling cut in from the right before firing past Hider.
The second half started with the Legends on the offensive and Swiggs almost restored the Legends lead, firing against the base of the upright after 50 mins.
The Legends then suffered a triple blow of injuries and conceded a goal in a crazy 3 minute spell. In the 52nd minute Leigh Cooper came off to be replaced by Andy Duncan. One minute later captain Chris Harrison was forced to leave the pitch, being replaced by Argyle's record appearance holder Kevin Hodges. Hodges played up front with O'Hagan moving back into defence. While the Legends were reorganising former Exeter City winger John Hodge scored from 25 yards, his shot somehow finding its way into the corner of the net.  O'Hagan who was injured in the build up to the goal was replaced by Spencer Cooper.
Throwing caution to the wind in search of an equaliser the Legends were indebted to Hider for making 2 tremendous saves to keep them in the game.
The equaliser duly came in the 72 minute when Hodges was tripped in the penalty area and Smith coolly completed his hatrick, slotting the ball home.
Chances continued to come and go at both ends but at full time the score remained 3-3.
