Argyle Legends vs Luggy's Legends 2014

Sunday 27th April

Argyle Legends put in a terrific team performance at Home Park on Sunday 27th April losing narrowly to Luggy's Legends by 3 goals to 2.

With Luggy's team hit by the late withdrawal's of Paul Maxwell and Gary Owers there was frantic pre match bartering with the Legends finally agreeing to loan Joe Davey and Kevin Hodges to their opponents.
The game got of to a dramatic start with Luggys's team opening the scoring in the 3rd minute with a wonder strike from Stewert Yetton. Receiving the ball 35 yards from goal Yetton hit a thunderous strike into the top right hand corner of the net, giving Legends keeper Garry Penhaligon no chance. Yetton was later to say it was the best goal he has ever scored.
The Legends were playing their usual brand of possession football but were finding chances hard to come by against a side containing 8 members of the 2001-02 championship winning side. With Michael Evans and Stewert Yetton working hard up front and Buster Phillips a constant threat on the right wing the Legends were indebted to the defence qualities of  Mark Saunders, Darren Tallon and Paul Edwards on numerous occasions.
The Legends playing a 4 - 5 - 1 formation were finding it difficult to find a way pass Paul Wotton and Steve Adams and Romain Larrieu was rarely troubled.
In the 32nd minute Martin (Buster) Phillips made it 2 - 0 to Luggy's team when he cut inside from the right to fire fire home from just outside the penalty area.
Ryan Cross and Darren Garner were starting to have and influence in the middle of the pitch and the Legends were certainly trying to take the game to their illustrious opponents.
There was no more scoring and the first half ended with Luggy's Legends leading 2 - 0.
It was agreed during the break that the second half would be of 35 minutes duration.
In the 53rd minute Luggy's Legends made it 3 - 0  when that man Yetton scored his second of the game with another clinical finish from just inside the box.
Undeterred by this setback the Legends hit back immediately when a Garner free kick squeezed past Larrieu and into the the left hand corner of the net.
The game was now much more even with Luggy's side visibly tiring and the Legends using their substitutes wisely. In the 67th minute Bradley Swiggs nearly reduced the deficit, his low shot hitting the base of the upright.
The Legends set up a thrilling finish when Swiggs scored 3 minutes from time to make it 3 - 2.
With the Legends pushing forward in search of an equalizer Penhaligon made 2 fine saves in the closing minutes as the game ended 3 - 2 to Luggys Legends.
As someone said after. If only the second half hadn't been shortened it may have ended in an honourable draw.
