Argyle Legends vs Manstow FC Vets 2017
Sunday 2nd July 2017
Argyle Legends extended their unbeaten run to 11 games with a comfortable 8-1 victory over Manstow Vets last Sunday.
The Legends gave a debut to former Plymouth Argyle and Northern Ireland international Warren Feeney and welcomed back Mark Saunders and Liam Ford after long absences through injury.
The game was played in warm sunshine at Filham Park, Ivybridge in front of a decent crowd and the Legends were forced into a early substitution when Mark Rowe hobbled off after only 5 mins with a calf injury. Mark Damerell replaced Rowe on the left hand side of midfield.
Feeney made a immediate impact when his great through ball gave David Byrne the opportunity to steer the ball pass the onrushing goalkeeper to put the Legends ahead after 9 mins.
The game remained evenly poised until the 26th minute when a poor goal kick by the home goalkeeper went straight to Ford who dispatched it right back into the net to put the Legends 2-0 ahead.
Legends goalkeeper Graham Kimberley was called into action making 3 saves in quick succession as Manstow tried to find a way back into the game. They were nearly undone by Feeney who almost marked his debut with a goal, his shot being cleared off the line.
The Legends defence well marshalled by captain Lee Hodges were now reducing the hosts to long range efforts as the referee blew her whistle for half time.
The second half started in dramatic style with the Legends scoring twice in the first 4 mins. After 48 mins Damerell made it 3-0 after a great pass from Ford and a minute later Ford made it 4-0.
After 60 mins Leigh Cooper limped off with a sore achilles. The Legends were forced to play on with 10 men with no more substitutes available.
In the 68th minute the hosts reduced the arrears with a well taken goal.
Four minutes later it was 5-1 to the Legends when Ben Hawke, loaned by Manstow to make up the numbers scored.
With the game now beyond them the hosts made a number of substitutions as the Legends ran away with the game scoring 3 times in 5 mins through Hawke with his second , Lee Coxon and Damerell again to make the final score 8-1.
