Argyle Legends vs North Devon Greens 2013
Sunday 22nd September
Argyle Legends threw away a 2 - 0 half time lead to lose 4 - 3 in a North Devon thriller played at Mill Road, the home of Barnstaple Town.
The game was the main event in the North Devon Greens Charity Football Day in aid of the Chestnut Appeal for Prostate Cancer.
The game saw the Legends on the offensive from the kick off against a well organised North Devon Greens side who often had 10 men behind the ball. The Legends were dominating the early possession and went ahead in the 15th minute when Bradley Swiggs scored from close range following a fine free flowing move.
With Darren Tallon outstanding at the back and Paul Edwards providing a great outlet at full back the Legends midfield of Martin Barlow, Paul Smith, Ryan Cross and Mark Rowe were spraying the ball around beautifully and increased their lead in the 29th minute when Paul Smith scored from close range. But for a couple of outrageous misses the Legends would have been 4 or 5 up at half time.
After 41 minutes central defender Tallon hobbled off with a shin injury and was replaced by Spencer Cooper. Almost immediately goalkeeper Ryan Draper made two outstanding saves to preserve the Legends half time lead.
Spurred on by these near misses the North Devon Greens started the second half on the offensive and it was clear that the next goal was crucial. It duly came in the 55th minute when the hosts reduced the lead. A minute later only a fantastic double save by Draper kept the Legends in front. It was now a totally different game and the hosts drew level in the 61st minute with the Legends defence all at sea. The Legends were further hampered when Martin Barlow came off with a slight groin strain and was replaced by Damien Davey.
The Legends were being over run in midfield and more woeful defending saw the home striker round Draper and make it 3-2 to the hosts. The Legends were hanging on but somehow found the strength to equalise in the 75th minute when Swiggs slotted home from just inside the penalty area.
Credit must be given to both sides for going all out for the winner and it was the North Devon Greens who scored what proved to be the eventual winner in the 83rd minute.
Despite it a couple of late scares with Owen Pickard going desperately close to snatching an equaliser it was the home side that secured a famous 4-3 victory.
