Argyle Legends vs Oak Villa Vets 2013

Sunday 3rd November 2013

Argyle Legends made it two wins in a row when they defeated Oak Villa Vets 6 - 1 in an entertaining game at Weston Mill, thereby retaining the Brian "Tex" Rickard Memorial Trophy.
The Legends went ahead after 90 seconds when a great 40 yard pass by Paul Edwards found Mark Damerell who squared the ball for Bradley Swiggs to score from close range. This early strike clearly shook the hosts who were expected to give the Legends a close game and the Legends doubled their lead in the 8th minute when Damerell scored with a cool finish following another fine flowing move.
With the Legends new central defensive pairing of Andy Duncan and Edwards in fine form Oak Villa were reduced to shooting from long range and goalkeeper Garry Penhaligon was not seriously tested.
Swiggs continued his recent rich vein of scoring when he scored his second and the Legends 3rd in the 21st minute.
Penhaligon made a fine save in the 27th minute as the hosts began to get a foothold into the game and was the Legends saviour again 2 minutes later with an even better save from a 25 yard effort destined for the top corner.
The game was much closer as the half progressed although Darren Garner almost increased the Legends lead when he shot straight at the keeper when clean threw. However there was no more scoring and the Legends went into the half time break leading 3 - 0.
Seven minutes into the second half the Legends were forced into a change when the injured Duncan hobbled off to be replaced by Spencer Cooper. Cooper slotted in at full back with Steve Brownlow switching to partner Edwards in central defence.
There was drama in the 55th minute when Swiggs was upended in the Oak Villa penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot. Martin Barlow suffered an injury in the build up and was replaced by Paul Smith who first touch was to to score from the spot to give the Legends a 4 - 0 lead.
The Legends were further disrupted when Damerell limped off in the 65th minute. The hosts were quick to take advantage and reduced the arrears in the 70th minute.
That man Swiggs was not to be denied and completed his hat trick in the 75th minute with a close range header to make it 5 - 1 to the Legends. This was Swiiggs ninth goal in his last three games.
The game was much more even in the second half and Penhaligon made 3 tremendous saves as the hosts refused to give up.
However it was not to be as Smith made it 6 - 1 to the Legends with his second penalty in the 86th minute.
