Argyle Legends vs Plymouth United 2012

Saturday 9th June 2012

A much changed Argyle Legends side followed up their magnificent performance v Manchester United Legends with a 9-1 victory against a gallant Plymouth United side at Estover Community College.
The scoreline somewhat flattered the Legends as the home side missed a penalty, hit the woodwork and saw 2 efforts go agonisingly wide of an open goal.
Playing on a 3G surface the Legends were soon into their stride with the home keeper saving efforts from Ryan Cross, Marcus Crocker and Darren Garner in the first 15 minutes. The Legends were susceptible to the long ball over the centre of their defence with goalkeeper Garry Penhaligon acting as sweeper on several occasions.
The Legends took the lead in the 18th minute when Garner fired home from the edge of the penalty box. Two minutes later Mark Damerell made it 2-0 with a header following a great cross from David Byrne.
The home side reduced the arrears in the 21st minute when the Legends failed to clear another long ball through the centre of their defence.
Damerell restored the Legends 2 goal advantage in the 27th minute with a cool left foot finish following a precision pass from the impressive Ryan Cross.
On the half hour Damerell scored the perfect hat trick when he smashed home a loose ball with his right foot to make it 4-1.
Plymouth United missed a penalty in the 36th minute when John Uzzell was adjudged to have tripped the home forward.
The home keeper made a magnificent save from Damerell on the stroke of half time, brilliantly tipping his long range effort over the crossbar.
The Legends made two changes at the start of the second half with Spencer Cooper and guest player Darren Redding replacing Geoff Battams and Joe Davey.
Five minutes into the second half Byrne was forced to come off with a hamstring injury, with Mark Damerell's son Curtis taking his place on the right hand side of midfield.
The Legends clinical finishing was the big difference between the sides with the Legends scoring at regular intervals through Cross (51 and 79 mins), Crocker (59 and 87 mins) and Damerell junior in the 81st minute as the game ended 9-1 in favour of the Legends.
A successful day was completed when it was announced that at least £850 had been raised for the Help for Heroes Charity.
