Argyle Legends vs Plymstock Veterans 2009

Plymstock Veterans 2 v 3 Argyle Legends 06/09/09

In a game where both captains agreed to play 35 minutes each half, it was Argyle Legends who dominated the early exchanges with both Darren Tallon and Kevin Nancekivell hitting the bar with headers. In front of a healthy crowd at Dean Cross the home side came into the game with a long range shot hitting the post after 15 minutes.

Argyle Legends continued to look the more threatening and deservedly went ahead in the 17th minute when guest player Jason Jones fired home from close range. With Darren Tallon and Ryan Cross in commanding form at the back and Leigh Cooper and Mark Rowe dominating midfield it came as no surprise when the latter made it 2-0 to the Legends in the 19th minute. Dogged defending by the hosts kept the Legends at bay until the half time whistle.

The second half saw the Legends immediately on the offensive and Kevin Nancekivell made it 3-0 in the 48th minute when he applied the finishing touch to a fine flowing move.

Plymstock were given a lifeline in the 52nd minute when a rare defensive lapse allowed the home side to reduce the arrears. Suddenly John Uzzell became the busier of the two goalkeepers and it was game on 3 minutes later when Uzzell made a fantastic stop only for a Plymstock forward to force home the rebound.

The Legends continued to take the game to Plymstock and Chris Harrison had a goal disallowed for offside in the 59th minute. With time running out Plymstock put the Legends under intense pressure and came close to an equaliser on several occasions. A last ditch tackle by Geoff Battams and a fine stop from John Uzzell saw the Legends run out eventual winners in what was a highly entertaining game.

The real winners on the day were the Mature Autistic Aspergers Group Charity.

Legends Line Up: John Uzzell, Nigel Jarvis, Ryan Cross, Darren Tallon, Geoff Battams,Chris Harrison, Leigh Cooper, Mark Rowe, Mark Damerell, Kevin Nancekivell, Jason Jones. Unused Substitute: Gordon Nisbet.
