Argyle Legends vs Tavistock Veterans 2011
21st August 2011
Argyle Legends produced a magnificent team performance to overcome an excellent Tavistock Veterans side by 2 goals to 1 in an entertaining game at Langsford Park, Tavistock.
The game, arranged to raise funds for Cancer Research, saw the Legends make a promising start with Kevin Hodges having his 30 yard drive pushed aside by the home goalkeeper in the 10th minute.
The Legends were soon into their passing game and dominated the next 15 minutes with Paul Smith, Darren Garner and Tommy Tynan all having shots saved by the overworked Tavistock keeper.
The Legends had a narrow escape after 26 minutes when Geoff Babb headed wide of an open goal when the ball was headed back into the 6 yard back following a corner on the left.
The game had now become more even without Legends goalkeeper Rhys Wilmot being seriously tested.
In the 35th minute Leigh Cooper fire wide after another scintillating Legends move.
Wilmot made a magnificent save from close range in the 38th minute to prevent the Legends from falling behind.
One minute later the Legends number 7 David Byrne was fouled on the corner of the penalty box. Despite frantic appeals for a penalty a free kick was given, much to the annoyance of Byrne.
In the 40th minute the Legends central defender Darren Tallon hobbled off with a slight thigh strain to be replaced by Graeme Kirkup. Before the Legends could re-organise Tavistock went ahead when Babb fired home from close range. This proved to be the only goal of a competitive first half.
Only a great save by Wilmot prevented the hosts going further ahead in the 47th minute as Tavistock started the second half on the offensive.
Slowly but surely the Legends regained the initiative with Darren Garner and Kevin Hodges outstanding in midfield and David Byrne and Paul Smith always a threat on the flanks.
In the 53rd minute Garner headed just wide after a great cross from Byrne. Tommy Tynan went close on two occasions as the home side were pushed back into their own half.
The inevitable equaliser came in the 61st minute when Marcus Crocker fired home a rasping drive from fully 25 yards.
The Legends continued to dominate and went ahead in the 67th minute, Paul Smith scoring from the penalty spot after Hodges was brought down as he powered into the penalty area.
As the game entered its' final quarter the Legends came close to increasing their lead with Smith, Crocker and Byrne all firing agonisingly wide.
Although the lead was slender, with Jason Rowbotham and Geoff Battams outstanding at the back, Wilmot was not seriously troubled.
Indeed it was the Legends who finished the stronger side with Byrne firing over and Crocker having his header saved by the home goalkeeper.
After 2 minutes of stoppage time the referee blew his whistle to give the Legends a great win.
