Argyle Legends vs Week St. Mary 2012
Sunday 26th August
It was a much changed Argyle Legends team that travelled to North Cornwall to play local village side Week St.Mary. The game arranged by Argyle Head Coach Kevin Nancekivell was to celebrate the opening of the home side's new pitch.
On a warm Bank Holiday afternoon and in front of a large crowd the Legends gave a debut to prolific local goalscorer Bradley Swiggs. Mark Dammerell's son Curtis partnered Swiggs up front in a new strike force.
The home side made a fast start to the game and were not prepared to give their more illustrious opponents time on the ball. In the 7th minute only a fine save by goalkeeper Rhys Wilmot prevented the Legends from falling behind.
In the 11th minute Curtis Dammerell opened the scoring with a great solo effort, skillfully beating two defenders before coolly slotting the ball into the corner of the net.
The hosts were level in less than a minute when Rob Pearce struck a tremendous drive past Wilmot. Roared on by what seemed like the whole village the home side went ahead in the 20th minute when Pearce scored his second after a mix up in the Legends defence.
Stunned by this setback the Legends roared back and Darren Garner made it 2-2 a minute later with another great solo effort.
With Mark Saunders outstanding in defence the Legends were slowly but surely getting the measure of their younger opponents but were saved by the crossbar and the post respectively as the home side continued to pose a threat.
In the 35th minute Garner scored his second and the Legends third goal of the game after great hold up play from Swiggs.
There was no more scoring in the first half of what was proving a very difficult game.
The Legends started the second half in sensational style and David Byrne made it 4-2 in the 46th minute with a cross cum shot that completely deceived the home goalkeeper.
This goal seemed to demoralise the home side as the Legends took total control of the game scoring at regular intervals through Byrne again (58 mins), Mark Dammerell (61st and 74th minute) and Garner taking his tally to four, with goals after 64th and 68th minutes, to run out 9-2 winners.
