Argyle Legends vs Weston Mill Oak Villa Vets 2014
Sunday 16th November
Argyle Legends once again paid the penalty for their willingness to play teams of all ages to raise money for charity when they were comprehensively beaten by 6 goals to 1 at Weston Mill on Sunday.
A spokesman for Argyle Legends subsequently said: Without wishing to offend or disappoint any Charity that may approach us in the future we must insist that opposing players are veterans and are at least 35 years old.We have a duty of care to protect our players, many who are now in their 50's,and can no longer compete against players 25 years their junior. We have raised thousands of £'s over the years and hope to continue doing so for many years to come, but regretfully we can no longer play the younger teams. This is something we have been considering for a while and does not reflect on today's opponents who were outstanding.
Weston Mill raced into a 2 goal lead within the first 10 minutes and although the Legends reduced the deficit with a Bradley Swiggs header on the stroke of half time, the second half was always going be physically demanding on the heavy surface.
This indeed proved to be the case and when captain and organiser Chris Harrison left the fray with 20 mins remaining the Legends collapsed and conceded 4 more goals to finish a well beaten side.
