Johnny Williams (December 09, 2011)
One of the true all time Argyle Legends, Johnny Williams sadly passed away on Thursday 24th November 2011 at the age of 76.
Many former team mates have paid tribute to a player who was universally popular with Argyle fans and players alike. Johnny was not only a great player on the pitch but a true gentleman off it.
In total he made 448 appearances for Argyle scoring 55 times and is best remembered for his ferocious long range shot which brought him many spectacular goals. But there was more to Johnny’s game than that. He was a real box to box player, a strong tackler and crisp passer of the ball. He was touted by other higher division clubs but Argyle resisted all offers. There was no doubt he would have been a great success at any level and many felt international honours would have come his way had he been plying his trade at a higher profile club.
Johnny’s last visit to Home Park came as part of the reunion of the 1958-59 Third Division championship winning squad when the players were reunited for the 50th anniversary of that memorable season. He was proud to take the applause of the Home Park crowd for what turned to be the final time.
Argyle Legends would like to pass on their condolences to his family and friends.
